Are you stuck in a book rut? I get that way sometimes where I know I want to read a book but I just can’t decide what I want to read. I have varied tastes when it comes to reading. Everything from Harry Potter to Nora Roberts lines my bookshelves. I probably have more books on my Kindle than I can read in a lifetime but that does not dissuade me from buying more books and reading more books. It’s an obsession really. Besides blogging, writing my own books and working outside the home I also have a husband, kids and 2 dogs that require attention as well so sometimes it is extremely hard to sit down and read a book. I don’t know about you but I like to listen to books as much as reading them and there is something wonderful about being able to listen to a book while you are doing something as mundane as washing dishes or folding laundry. I heard a saying about crocheting once that said something like “You know you are a crocheter when you have watched 5 seasons of a TV show and have no idea what any of the characters look like.” I don’t know how many of you can relate but I certainly can. So instead of TV watching I turn on an audio book. You don’t have to know what the characters look like because it is all your imagination anyway. It really is the perfect solution to having your hands full all the time.
On my old Kindle it has a text to speech option which is an okay alternative if you don’t mind the robotic voice reading to you, but my favorite is an app I found called OverDrive. For those of you who don’t know what overdrive is let me tell you a bit about it. OverDrive is an app that is connected to your public library. They have more than 30,000 libraries in 40+ countries! You sign up with your library card and then you can choose from the library’s digital collection. They have e-books and audio books. Sometimes you can’t always find what you are looking for but they are constantly updating and if the book you are wanting is already checked out you can place a hold on it so you will be the next in line to read it. Oh and I forgot to mention it is free! The app, the sign up and the book borrowing is all free! You can’t beat that! You also won’t have any late fees because once your borrowing period is over it automatically gets taken off your device. How awesome is that?
This past summer I had major dental work done. I’m sure some of you can relate to being terrified at the dentist and having anxiety over just being in a dentist office. While I really love my new dentist I was seriously traumatized as a kid at the dentist. My new dentist suggested using my headphones while I was getting work done. Instead of listening to music I decided to listen to a book while I was in the chair. Besides them giving me some great pain meds, it really did help me. I was able to zone out of the current reality of torture, (Just kidding. My dentist really is great. That’s just how I relate to dentists.) and zone into another world where they don’t have to think about torture chairs. The work was over before I knew it. Over the next few days I was pretty useless. My pain meds kept me in kind of a haze where I couldn’t really keep my eyes open long enough to watch a movie or anything like that so I kept listening to my audio book. It made the whole horrible situation a tiny bit better.
Honestly, if you are like me and you love to read on top of the million other things you have going on in your life you should try listening to an audio book. If OverDrive doesn’t sound like something you are interested in you could also check out Audible. You get a 30 day free trial.
Thanks for reading my post. If anyone has questions or comments I would love to hear from you! Happy reading and listening.
